Geography
While the Wynn Golf Club and Bali Hai Golf Club are located on the Las Vegas Strip, most Las Vegas golf courses are located off the Strip or in the surrounding suburbs of Las Vegas. For a golfer staying on the Strip, many courses are only a short drive or cab ride away. For example, the Mirage, located on the north end of the Strip, is less than four miles from the Las Vegas National Golf Club, which has hosted PGA and LPGA events. Even the Wildhorse Golf Club in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Nevada is only 10 miles away.
Facts
In addition to being featured in the movie Casino, the Las Vegas National Golf Club was the course where Tiger Woods earned his first PGA victory. When Steve Wynn built The Wynn Golf Club on the site of the former Desert Inn Golf Club (which hosted PGA, LPGA and Senior PGA tournaments), he saved and relocated more than 1,200 trees from the old course. The tee boxes at the 10th hole at the Legacy Golf Club are in the shape of playing card suits: clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades.
Types
While Las Vegas has a bevy of championship and resort courses as well as plenty of courses offering desert scenery, the Angel Park Golf Club offers golfers something a little different. The Cloud Nine Short Course allows golfers to sample noted golf holes from around the world, and the facility also has a nine-hole natural grass putting course. The putting course as well as nine of the 12 holes on the short course are lit, so golfers can play after dark.
Costs
Courses on the Strip cost much more than courses off the Strip. For example, as of September 2009, the Wynn Golf Club costs $300 per player during the week and $375 per player on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. By contrast, as of September of 2009, the Las Vegas National Golf Club, a public course only two miles from the Strip, cost $89 per player during the peak time of day, $69 per player during twilight and $40 per player during super-twilight.
Rates at most Las Vegas golf courses also vary widely by season. For example, as of September 2009, peak rates at Bali Hai Golf Club cost $175 per player during the week and $195 per player on the weekend during the summer, and averaged $245 per player during the week and $295 per player on the weekend during peak seasons. As of September 2009, the Legacy Golf Club cost $75 per player during the summer while during the winter the greens fees ran $109 per player during the week and $119 per player during the weekend.
Warnings
Like most courses, those in Las Vegas book up on the weekends. Keep in mind though, in the summer, the temperatures reach triple digits, so tee times in the early morning and late afternoon book up in advance.
