460cc Club Head
The USGA and the RGA have set the maximum size for a driver head at 460cc, and Callaway has utilized that maximum in a unique shape that promotes long, straight shots with a very large sweet spot to minimize the effects of mis-hits. This club has a large face that is hard to miss even with bad swings.
Technology
The Big Bertha 460 has a titanium head that maximizes the size of the thin face and stretches the shape of the club head back away from the sweet spot. This moves the center of gravity back and lower in the club to help give the average player a higher launch angle and longer carry off the tee.
Shaft Flex
With a super-lightweight senior shaft, this club is easy to swing for less-powerful players with slower swing speeds. This gives older players a chance to really snap the club head through the ball and take advantage of the sizable sweet spot in this driver.
Loft
Common knowledge has it that less loft on a stiffer-shafted driver is the best way to hit the ball farther. Common knowledge is sometimes too common for the common good. The most up to date research says that with slower golf swings, the best way to maximize distance is with a softer, lighter shaft and more loft. The 11 degrees of loft on this senior-shafted driver combined with a club head speed of less than 80 or 85 mph will combine to optimize both launch angle and overall distance for the average player in this range.
Price and Availability
While the Big Bertha 460 is a discontinued club, it is still available as a remainder in many shops and from many online retailers, including the Callaway pre-owned Web site. Prices range from about $100 to $150 for used clubs and up to $200 for a new club.
