The Old Line State is one of the smaller states in the country, but Maryland is still home to some great golf. The following is GolfLink's list of Maryland's best public courses.


Worthington Manor Golf Club

Located in Washington, DC’s northwest suburbs, Worthington Manor is a former cattle farm turned golfing destination. The course was designed and built by Ault, Clark & Associates in 1998 and remains nestled in thr countryside, offering bucolic views just a short distance from one of America’s busiest cities.The course is fairly open, but remains challenging thanks to very fast greens and smart bunkering. The course has served as host for U.S. Open qualifying and has the full amenities of a private club while remaining fully public.

Queenstown Harbor Golf Links is home to two courses, the perfectly playable Lakes course and the much more scenic and challenging River course. The course was designed by Lindsay B. Ervin in 2011 and stands at 7,110 yards from the tips. Water comes into play heavily on the course, with several forced carries sprinkled throughout. The course is well maintained and provides ample challenge for all skill levels, though higher handicappers may want to stick to the Lakes course. Weather is also a factor so be sure and check local wind speeds.

Musket Ridge Golf Club

Musket Ridge Golf Club is routinely considered one of Maryland’s top courses. The course was designed by Joe Lee in 2001, architect of famed courses at Trump Doral and Bay Hill, and has gotten everything from the beautiful green landscape. The course will challenge all aspects of your game and require accuracy and decision making over distance on most holes. The course also has excellent facilities and golfers can easily spend the whole day at this beautiful course.

Whiskey Creek Golf Club

Whiskey Creek is a relatively new course, only completed in 2011, but is renown for its variety and challenge. The course was designed by the team of J. Michael Poellet and 4 time major winner Ernie Els. The course is West of Baltimore and contends with multiple elevation changes on the rolling terrain, with interesting obstacles uncluding the ruins of an old house. The course uses a lot of strategy, with high risk/reward shots as well. The course’s bucolic atmosphere will put you at ease as you work to tame this beautiful property. Expect excellent conditions and facilities on your day out.

Maryland National Golf Club

Maryland National Golf Club sits in Central Maryland in the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains and represents one of Arthur Hills best designs. The course is carved from the natural terrain and uses both wetlands and elevation changes to keep it interesting. The course offers beautiful views and the 6,811 yards means it is more playable than many championship courses in terms of lengths, but don’t be deceived, Maryland National is one of the state’s toughest tests.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort

Rocky Gap Casino Resort is a getaway in Western Maryland that also provides a great game of golf. The course is the only Jack Nicklaus designed course in Maryland. The front nine, in particular, uses stunning elevation changes into valleys and rocky crags to create a memorable golfing experience. The back 9 takes place on a flatter track of land and provide golfers with a more traditional layout, one that may leave the hackers happy but can feel like a let down after the blood and thunder of the front 9. Still, the course is in great condition and remains one of the state’s best options.

Lake Presidential Golf Club

Lake Presidential Golf Club’s course winds around its eponymous name just 15 miles outside of WAshington, DC. The course was designed by Jeff Potts to test every club in your bag. The property is large, with pretty views of both the lake and surrounding countryside. Naturally, water comes into play often on the course and strategic bunkering makes for a very strategic round.

Lodestone Golf Course

McHenry’s Lodestone Golf Course was built in 2009 by course designer and architect Hale Irwin and Todd Schoeder. The course makes good use of the mountainous terrain to build numerous interesting holes with elevation changes. Golfers should expect tree lined fairways and punishing bunkers. The scenery is brilliant, with rocky outcroppings peaking through the greenery at numerous occasions. The course is regarded as one of the most challenging, and golfers should bring their best game.

Bulle Rock Golf Club

Bulle Rock is widely considered Maryland’s best public course and is one of the best in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. The course was designed by the legendary Pete Dye in 1998, and the facilities truly feel like an exclusive private club. Expect all the ticks here, from forced carries and elevation changes to risk/reward shots testing all aspects of your game. If there’s one course you play in Maryland, let it be this one.
