Need
A car is generally necessary, especially if exploring the islands is part of your travel plans. With the exception of Honolulu, most of the Hawaiian Islands do not have a reliable system of public transportation. In many cases, renting a car may be your only viable alternative. If you are traveling to some of the more remote areas, a four-wheel drive vehicle may be necessary.
Age
Some rental car companies will not rent you a vehicle if you are under the age of 25. However, others may rent to you if you are between the ages of 21 and 25 as long as an additional daily fee is paid. Children under the age of 4 are required by law to be secured in a child seat, which can be rented if you do not wish to bring your own.
Documents
To rent a vehicle in Hawaii, you will need a valid driver's license and an active credit card. Some companies may also accept a debit card, but a credit check might be required. If using your own car insurance, proof of insurance such as a financial responsibility card will be needed. If other people will also be driving the vehicle, a driver's license may also be necessary.
Insurance
Car rental insurance can be purchased when renting the vehicle. Many car insurers will allow you to extend your current coverage to a rental vehicle. This could vary depending on the policy, so it is best to check with your insurance agent for available options. Coverage may also be available through a credit card company if using its card to rent the vehicle.
Fees
In addition to the daily car rental rate, other charges will apply when renting a vehicle. In Hawaii, the state applies a surcharge of $3 a day, as well as a tax of 4.17 percent as of 2009. Depending on the rental company, other fees may include an airport concession fee, licensing and registration fees and daily charges for additional drivers.
