As one of the top players in Canadian golf history, Mike Weir is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and has secured one major championship. Weir was born in Sarnia, Ontario, on May 12, 1970, and was an avid hockey player during his childhood but eventually developed his passion for golf. Weir turned professional in 1992 following a successful amateur career.
Early Career
Weir attended Brigham Young University where he was an All-American selection during his senior season. Weir joined the Canadian Professional Golf Tour in 1992 and won his first tournament a year later at the 1993 Infinity Tournament Players Championship. Weir notched his second Canadian Tour victory in 1997 at the Canadian Masters.
PGA Tour
Up until 1999, Weir was winless on the PGA Tour but secured his first victory at the Air Canada Championship. The win jump-started Weir's career as he went on to win other notable events such as the WGC-American Express Championship in 2000 and the 2001 Tour Championship. From 2001-2005, Weir spent in excess of 100 weeks in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. For his career, Weir has surpassed $25 million in earnings.
2003 Masters and Major Championships
As of July 2009, Weir won his first and only major championship at the 2003 Masters after defeating Len Mattiace in a playoff. At the time, he became the first Canadian-born player to prevail at Augusta National and only the second left-hander to win a major in the last 40 years. In total, Weir has compiled 11 top 10 finishes in major competition, including finishing inside the top 10 in six of nine majors from 2003-2005.
Other Ventures
In addition to his golf career, Weir has branched off into several different business endeavors. Weir partnered with Creekside Estate Winery and created his own brand of wine and is in the process of developing his own winery. Furthermore, Weir has his own clothing line and golf design company, which has been involved in numerous projects since its inception.
Personal
Weir resides in Sandy, Utah, along with his wife and two daughters. Weir has earned Canada's Male Athlete of the Year award on three occasions and in 2007 was named a Member of the Order of Canada, the nation's top civilian honor. In 2004, the Mike Weir Foundation was created to generate money for children in Canada. As of early 2009, the foundation had raised more than $5 million.
