Early Career
Toms' talent was apparent early in his childhood as he went on to be an extremely successful junior golfer. He played collegiately at Louisiana State University before turning professional in 1992. Toms' first PGA Tour victory came at the Quad City Classic in 1997, and he won on two other occasions during the remainder of the decade.
PGA Championship and Major Competition
Toms is most remembered for his win at the 2001 PGA Championship where he defeated Phil Mickelson by one stroke. His score of 265 remains the lowest total score in major tournament history. In total, Toms has compiled eight top 10 finishes during major competition. He's taken part in three U.S. Ryder Cup teams with a record 4-6-2 and has participated on two winning Presidents Cup teams.
PGA Tour
Although Toms was held winless in 2002 following his win at the PGA Championship, he managed two wins during the 2003 campaign (Wachovia Championship and FedEx St. Jude Classic). He successfully defended his FedEx St. Jude Classic title in 2004 and notched arguably the second biggest win of his career at the WGC Match Play Championship in 2005. His worldwide status continued to grow as Toms spent in excess of 175 weeks in the top 10 of the Official Worldwide Golf Rankings from 2001-2006.
Other Ventures
In 2003, the Davis Toms Foundation was created to help rebuild the lives of underprivileged and abused children. His foundation helped raise more than $1.5 million after Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans and the surrounding areas. In addition, Toms has helped design or re-design several golf courses, including Palmetto Dunes Club and Carter Plantation, both located in Louisiana.
Personal Life
Toms and his family currently reside in Shreveport, Louisiana, where they take place in numerous charitable events in addition to his foundation. Toms is an avid hunter and a major supporter of the LSU Tigers athletic program. He was named an honorary captain for the Tigers' football game against Tulane in 2001.
